A heroic rescue mission on the River Nile today ended with both relief and tragedy. Eleven passengers were saved from rising floodwaters, but the operation claimed the life of a brave rescuer.

The incident occurred when a transport van traveling from Lira to Arua became stranded at Tangi Gate, a crucial link between the West Nile region and Nwoya District, after torrential rains caused severe flooding. The van, carrying 19 passengers, was caught in the flood, leaving its occupants stranded.

Rescue teams, comprising personnel from the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) Marines, swiftly responded to the crisis. However, the rescue mission took a tragic turn when their boat, carrying six rescuers and six victims, capsized. One of the rescuers, a UNRA engineer, tragically lost his life during the effort.
